How SandBar Turned a Beach Sport into a Year-Round Utah Business

June 11, 2025

Cory Merrell has always been drawn to entrepreneurship, staying active, and being social — a combination that turned out to be a formula for success. As a beach volleyball enthusiast in a state known for its snow, he found himself facing a dilemma: how to keep playing a summer sport with no coast in sight.

That idea eventually turned into SandBar SLC, Utah’s first year-round indoor beach volleyball facility. Located in North Salt Lake, the venue features indoor and outdoor sand courts with a variety of programs and leagues, weekend tournaments, and open play sessions. The facility also offers group training and a junior’s program so anyone can benefit, whether beginner or advanced players.

A key moment in his journey was when Merrell saw similar efforts succeed. “I wanted to make beach volleyball year-round in a landlocked state with four seasons,” Merrell said. “Seeing other places that are like Utah be successful in my dream really helped give me the drive to bring it here.”

Merrell went back to school to pursue his MBA at the University of Utah, where he got his start through the Get Seeded program at the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute. Through early support, funding, and mentorship, the momentum helped him eventually secure an SBA loan for the facility.

Along the way, Merrell learned what it takes to turn an idea into a lasting business. He credits much of his success to a strong network, citing parents, mentors, and friends as a support system. He also encourages other entrepreneurs to keep things lean in the beginning by starting small and staying flexible. “Always find a way to test your ideas with minimal costs. Prove concept and grow from there — or pivot.”

For Merrell, building SandBar wasn’t just about bringing a sport indoors; it was about creating a space that reflected the spirit of his home. “I grew up in Utah and have always loved this state,” he said. “Sandbar works here because there are so many people who enjoy being social, all while still being active.”
