Pitch competition participation guide

Get Started: Business Idea Challenge

The Get Started: Business Idea Challenge, created by the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity (GOEO), in partnership with the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute at the University of Utah, invites all Utahns to participate in a business idea challenge to help validate an early-stage business idea. This idea challenge is a milestone grant program allowing Utahns to present their business idea in a supportive environment of peers, entrepreneurs, and community members without the high pressure of a traditional pitch competition. Participants ask for a small, specific amount of funding to accomplish achievable, short-term milestones—such as idea validation, prototyping, or marketing —to be completed within 30-90 days after receiving funding.

The Get Started: Business Idea Challenge is part of the broader Startup StateTM Initiative effort to make Utah a leader in entrepreneurship and innovation. The Startup StateTM Initiative highlights what already exists in Utah and elevates it to new heights. It isn’t just about Utah; it’s about setting a new global standard for innovation and entrepreneurship.
Please review the guide below for more information on eligibility and application evaluation criteria.

Get Started Milestone-based Microgrant Application Stages

Get Started: Business Idea Challenge

Step 1: Complete the microgrant application online

All Utah residents with a business idea are encouraged to apply. Applications are due by the first Wednesday of the month. Only one application will be accepted per email address in the current month. A participant can apply multiple times throughout the year. Previous winners must complete their previous milestones before applying.

Stage 2: Application Review

Applications will be reviewed for completeness, and the top 15 applications will be selected by the Program Managers based on the reward criteria and notified by the second Wednesday of the month.

Image

Stage 3: Top 15 Participants

The top 15 participants will be sent the formal pitch deck that will be used in the final pitch presentation, and the Program Managers will conduct a confirmation of the W9 submissions. Participants will have one week to complete all required documentation leading up to the Live Pitch Event.

Image

Stage 4: Live Pitch Event

Live pitches will occur virtually on the third Wednesday of every month. The format will be a three (3) minute presentation with an optional one (1) minute Question and Answer period from the Program Managers.

Stage 5: Voting

Voting will be conducted simultaneously and immediately after the Pitches. Participants who join the virtual event, including the presenters, can vote for and rank the presenters based on the rubric. While the rubric is the primary means to access the winners, it is ultimately up to the Program Managers to decide who the winners are.

Stage 6: Award

Awards will be administered after the voting and winners are announced. The winner is responsible for coordinating with the Program Managers to complete all required paperwork and the award payment procedures. The award winners have up to thirty (30) days to complete all the necessary documentation and schedule payment.

Stage 7: Marketing and follow-up

After being announced the winner of the Get Started program, the awardees must schedule an appointment with GOEO and their partners to do an official write-up on the startup.utah.gov website and get photos taken for any marketing materials. Awardees may be contacted up to twenty-four (24) months after the award for follow-up stories, marketing collateral, and progress reports.
